Variable fonts are a powerful innovation in type technology, enabling a single file to contain a full spectrum of styles and weights. In this project, students explored the creative potential of variable fonts, beginning with the design of pixel fonts and culminating in original or remixed variable font files. Throughout the process, they were challenged to consider how this technology could shape a meaningful user experience on the web. To bring their ideas to life, students built interactive digital specimens—web-based showcases that not only demonstrated their fonts in action, but also communicated the concepts behind them.
